Question for guitarist out there?

I'm really taking guitar serous and I want to advance. I'm not looking to be another Eddie Van Halen although it would be nice anyway my intereste are oldies rock and some 80s rock like Damn Yankees, I have a Kramer Paul Dean sig model. I know the basics strumming, power chords, Major chords, Minor Chords, a few songs, you guys know any other instruvitonal DVD I can buy that shows me more advanced stuff. I dont have time for lessons and Im a visual learner anyway. Also can you offer me any advice othern than dont quit, and keep practicing? Thanks

I also enjoy old rock and the 80s! I taught myself the guitar and bought a gibson les paul classic custom. I started out by learning some of my favorite songs (ie, Peace of Mind and More Than a Feeling by Boston, Blue Collar Man and Grand Illusion by Styx, some Journey, Beatles, CCR, and some other old stuff) and by doing that, I learned chords, rhythms, and my fingers strengthed and I began to improve. I would also go buy books with tab in them to learn songs, and to learn chords and scales. Now I'm playing stuff like Eruption by Van Halen and learning some of the stuff by Steve Vai and creating some stuff of my own. I don't know, but I guess it worked for me.

Continue learning songs you like and learn chords and scales and be creative, making up your own stuff. If you need some good dvds, you can go to a guitar center (if you have one in town) and they have an excellent selection of dvds, books, and other learning materials, as well as knowledgeable staff who are generally musicians. If not, go to your local music store or search around on the internet. There are many podcasts and videos online that are free and that can teach you some useful techniques and ideas concerning the guitar.

Also, you've probably heard it a lot but keep on practicing. Don't quit because it seems hard. It is hard for everyone at first, but as you progress, you can see it and you become more encouraged and you will keep getting better and better and have more and more fun.

Anyone know where to get a cheap Gibson SG Standard?

Yeah. Looking around at guitars and playing em and stuff and I love the SG look, sound, playing in a band now and am looking for the Angus Youngish sound but not entirely, hence not getting the signature. But here's my question. Does anyone know where I can get a cheap Gibson SG Standard in cherry red in or available to Australia? Any help would be great. Thanks.

If you're looking for a cheap one, don't buy new. try local pawn shops or eBay.

Why did Jimi Hendrix burn and break his guitar?

I watched a concert of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Hendrix actually set his guitar on fire and started breaking it after he humped it.

I think he's awesome, but dude................there's a limit.

That was not just any average concert, but the Monterey Pop Festival of 1967... It was just a guitar and he had finished his set..., there was a war on, people were dying, and here was one day of Peace and Music, put on by the Mamas and the Papas , and the Who had just finished, (and they too were instrument smashers). and so he had to better them, (and he sure did.) The guitar is now in a Museum, I think, in Bethel in New York. I wouldn't suggest any amateru smash a guitar, but that moment in time was pivotal.

Classical Guitar & Wedding Cake Recommendations for Vermont (Stowe Area)?

Does anyone have recommendations for a classical guitarist to perform at my winter wedding (just before and during the ceremony)? I also need to order a wedding cake and my flowers, so any recommendations there would be greatly appreciated.

I'm closer to southern VT, so I can't recommend particular names. However, I'd recommend going to maps.google.com and typing in "wedding cakes, stowe, vt" or "musician, stowe, vt", etc. It's usually great at finding names. Also, I'm sure the whole state of VT has wedding web sites with resources on who to ask. You could call the music dept of UVM and ask for a good classical guitarist. Oh, and www.bigyellow.com (the online yellow pages) would be good for searching for a baker if google maps doesn't offer a good result.

Have fun! :) Classical guitar is great at a wedding! I hired one when I was the maid of honor. Just know that they're not very loud, so it's best for a small event or it'd have to be amplified. It also wouldn't be best for the reception since it may not carry over voices.

guitar killswitch wiring

guitar killswitch wiring
guitar killswitch help?

I would like to build a killswitch for my electric guitar. I thought about building one into my guitar but I decided against it.

I found this tutorial for building a 'pedal' killswitch:
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/sho…

It looks to me like it is shorting the guitar signal...Last time I checked shorting out electronics was bad and screwed stuff up...so why do you short out the guitar signal here? Maybe there's something I'm missing here...is this shorting of the wires bad or not for my guitar and amp? Also, this won't give me the 'cable came unplugged from the guitar' sound will it?

Thanks for any help
~sam

When we are talking about anything that has to do with power like an AC line or any such item than yes shorting it can be disasterous and even deadly! But when we are referring to an audio signal such as the kind from your guitars pickups then there is no voltage present so no harm can be done to you or your equipment.
In a way, every guitar has a killswitch. The volume control is exactly that, a way to "kill" the signal to the amp. A killswitch works on the same principal of shorting the positive signal to ground. With a volume control you are simply adjusting the amount of signal that you are shorting to ground. The more you decrease the volume the more signal is being diverted to the ground.
If you have a Les Paul style guitar you can use the toggle switch as a kill switch. Simply turn down one of the pickups all the way and use the toggle switch to move between the pickups. Since one is up and the other is down you will hear the familiar "killswitch" effect. This only works on guitars that have a separate volume control for each pickup.
