Why do I lose sound when play guitar live and switch from a clean setting to a distorted setting?

When I play music live, I lose sound when I switch to my distorted setting. Why? I play guitar and use a Line 6 amp. I use 4 settings and use 2 clean settings and 2 distorted settings. It hasn't always been like this.

Thats why you should buy a distortion pedal. They actually boost the sound of your amp when you turn them on. You should invest in one. But other than that all I can say is just turn up the overdrive volume.
